When Andrew first said sculptural matcha bowl... I didn't get it.
For me teaware is only as good as it focuses on function.
But,
the more he talked and explained,
the more I fell in love with the romance of the idea.
Now, much like you or I have with our hobbies or work, Andrew has potters that he looks up to,
ones that inspire him,
ones that he aspires to be like.
While some of them are in the tea space, many of them are sculptural potters.
One thing about potters who are selling sculptures, is they are selling art in its truest form.
Art that is merely designed to be appreciated and is often times very expensive...
So after he took his journey east, to Kochi Prefecture in Japan, discovered tea ceremony, and starting to make teaware...
the idea came.
He knew the struggle of not being able to afford the sculptures of potters he loves,
so what if he could combine the functional use as a matcha bowl with the artistic representation of a sculpture.
I still love an all function forward bowl from time to time,
but,
I have fallen for the idea and practice of displaying sculptural bowls like these around my house which bring me a smile as I pass them and a bowl of matcha when I use them.
