The small simple clay stones are made with the same single source Lizella clay that Mark uses for his teapots.
When you are using a kettle that does not have variable temperature on it, sometimes it can be hard to tell what temperature the water is before it gets to a boil. These offer a satisfying rocking back and forth and popping as the water heats up to right before a boil.
They will react different with each kettle and will work with any kettle that you are heating whether electric, clay or metal.
Far from a necessity but that doesn't make the subtle popping any less satisfying.
