Technical Nerdy Stuff

I don’t know if it was intentional or just perfect timing, but these pots landed at a point in Jonathan’s work where everything seems to click...

exceptional proportions,

great balance,

and an unmistakable blend of function and style that’s uniquely his.

Each teapot carries some signature touches: undercut bottoms, small bases, narrow openings, and intentionally protruding handle attachments that add a quiet flare.

All of that before you even factor in the wood firing — the natural movement of flame that gives every surface its own story.

While the phrase “small batch” gets tossed around a lot, here it actually means something.

These pots feel frozen in a specific moment of Jonathan’s journey, a chapter you can hold.

As Mark said on our last episode of Between the Cracks,

“Jonathan’s pots have been beautiful the entire time... but his pots have gotten better, and better, and better.”

And it’s true.

He’s still refining, but this feels like the sweet spot, a point where the pots are both highly aesthetic and highly functional, before the next level of evolution (and price) inevitably comes.

One of my favorite things about Jonathan’s work is the rolling variation he gets from firing to firing.

Even when you start to recognize certain “kiln looks,” the results never quite repeat.

Part of that comes from the way he rolls his glazes and reclaim forward — something we love from a sustainability standpoint, but also because it means no two firings are ever the same.

Each batch marks a specific season of his growth as an artist.

A few functional notes worth mentioning:
Despite their small proportions, the design pushes performance in subtle ways:
a slight pouch under the spout for smoother flow,
a tall and slender lid knob that’s easy to grip,
and handle loops wide enough to slide a finger through for a stable hold.

They do pull a bit low for a pinch grip, but that’s a small tradeoff for the balance and control you get.

These pots sit right at the intersection of form and function — beautiful enough to display, but if you leave them on a shelf it's a diservice to you and the pot.
